Complementary findings A step-by-step plan has been developed which can help a fishing entrepreneur to get a better idea of whether a secondary activity (business case) is a feasible way of broadening his activities at sea. The average cost prices given in this report (per day at sea) for different types of fishing vessels are based on the average number of days the vessels are engaged in fisheries per year. The smallest vessels tend to sail a limited number of days (100 days at sea, with peaks of up to 150) and the larger vessels an average of around 190 days at sea, with peaks of up to 225. The amounts cited may be regarded as an approximate basis for pricing new activities at sea other than fisheries. The cost prices calculated (operating costs only) are exclusive of red diesel costs and any write-downs on investments and interest costs connected with the extension of activities beyond fisheries (see table 2). The variation in cost prices per day at sea per type of cutter is fairly large, but particularly so within the different classes of vessel. The cost prices are dependent on the age of the ship, with the size of existing depreciation and interest costs playing an important role. The average cost prices may be regarded as an approximate basis for setting rates which owners of cutters can use to at least cover costs in their operations; in other words, no allowance has been made for profit mark-ups. A reasonable profit margin, 10% for instance, could be added on top of the average invested capital, which might work out differently for each company. Because owners of cutters are able to charge competitive daily rates for their vessels (as little as half the costs of other vessels, Sytse Ybema, 2011) there would appear to be sufficient market opportunities. Methodology This short study has looked at the most important opportunities in the market for Dutch sea fishermen (cutter fisheries) when it comes to extending activities beyond fishing alone: marine and maritime research, activities for the purposes of fish and seaweed farming at sea, service provision to the offshore industry, cleaning (trawling for litter from the sea) and activities in response to emergencies, such as tackling disasters at sea. 60 HP Average Cost price (excluding red diesel, depreciation and interest on additional investments) 1.800 2.000 3.400 4.300 4.700 Pagina 65
