Space is to be understood as a dynamic intertwining of countless narratives and movements, an encounter of human interests with the autonomous developments and possibilities that are already inherent to the specific area or location. Man and environment are thrown into each other’s paths in a particular relational situation – a thrown-ness (‘Geworfenheit’) that has the character of a never ending process. Had the designers of the large post-war urban settlements that are so typical of the Netherlands – the so called vinex-locations – incorporated this insight, the word ‘vinex’ would never have acquired its negative connotation, but would have been synonymous with a planological vision of wisdom, quality of life, thoroughness and a feel for the happy temporality of things. The fact that it did not happen in this way is part of the tragic of traditional Dutch planology. Various other statements also draw the attention to this question. The fact that planology and landscape produce each other more than a traditional planologist can conceive (statement 2), could stimulate you to ask yourself what kind of spectacles you are wearing when you are looking at a location, and if you would have the courage to look at it through the looking-glass of relational planology – and to act accordingly, and ask yourself what this would mean. The redemption from a yoke (statement 3)? A relieving stimulus to navigate the waves of uncertainty (statement 4), convinced that exactly there, in the uncertain niches of reality, lies the chance for beauty and a sense of humanity to manifest themselves? And as a visionary climax the hypothesis that sustainability is not so much something that can be decreed or imposed, but something that comes with patience, with humility, and with a careful listening of spatial narratives without drowning away in the false fundamentalism of universal values?
