Seen as such, this new way of perceiving the development of areas and planology (the dutch name for landscape and town planning) can lead to a literal revolution, a turnaround that experts have already coined as a spatial turn. Relational planology And indeed, if there is a turn to be made, then it is here. That this spatial turn revolves around much more than the proclamation of the primacy of temporality (against the false permanency of traditional planology) one can observe in the fact the experts in this field are still looking for an adequate terminology to express what exactly is at the heart of the matter. I have formulated ten statements that in my view touch upon the essence of a relational planology. All statements can be reduced to a fundamental reflection on the phenomenon of space. Everyone who is involved in the organisation of the environment in which we live should at least once ask himself what space is about. Is it a playing field that we as autonomous and immaculate subjects can approach and that we may manipulate as we please within the matrixes of economy and law? Or is reality much more subtle – and ultimately much more beautiful – and is space about the feeling and presumption that in the act of creating a new environment we also create ourselves? Show me in which environment you live, work and care, and I will tell you who you are or would like to be. In the new language of a relational planology this could be a leading question.
