(EIM, Zoetermeer) InnovationNetwork Report 09.2.xxx, Utrecht, The Netherlands, February 2009. Introduction The fishing sector is in troubled waters. Since the start of this century the fleet has decreased by 15% in ship numbers and by 30% in engine capacity. In that same time the number of businesses has fallen by about 15% with about 400 businesses still remaining. In the longer term, too, no clear growth opportunities for the primary activity of the fishing industry (catching fish) can be identified and further contraction of this activity looks more probable, partly due to fishing restrictions and the drive towards sustainable fisheries. The current fisherman is above all a hands-on skilled professional. Other aspects of entrepreneurship, such as vision development (suggestie: enterprenural philosophy), management, market exploration, innovation and risk-taking, are much less developed. The Fisheries Innovation Platform (VIP) has the ambition to encourage Dutch fishermen to expand the scope of their activities on the North Sea and ultimately evolve into multi-purpose entrepreneurs.
