46 Short term (already feasible) Reed-thatched roofs Small-scale fuel application (part of fuel mix/ pelletization) Medium term (R&D/pilot phase) Chipboard Insulation in Loam Construction Packaging materials Substrate for greenhouses Bank and shore protection Long term (innovation and upscaling of reed production) Paper Large-scale energy Chemicals The next step was to focus on the applications that are interesting in the short and medium term. These applications were worked out in fiches. After completing the talks with various parties, the following conclusions were drawn: • During the exploratory study, interesting new applications for reed were discovered for very diverse markets, • In terms of cost price the use of reed must in the future be able to compete within existing markets, • The main advantages of reed in the identified applications lie in the sustainable and ‘ecological’ characteristics of reed as a local, renewable and responsibly produced source without competition with existing agriculture; competition does occur with (one or more) other existing environmentally-friendly applications, • Each described application still requires, to a greater or lesser extent, further product R&D and can be expected to become available in the short (3 years) or medium term (5-10 years), • It is now up to the market to pursue the further development and marketing of the most promising applications; optionally, consortiums can be set up for this purpose. • The applications can form a new source for the use of reed and, hence, for the (local) cultivation of reed. As soon as the reed market is in place, the development of applications with longer development lead times or requiring large quantities of reed can be considered. Upscaling along this route will be possible as soon as the Reed Economy is up and running. Pagina 51
