Summary 45 Potential high-grade reed applications – A market exploration Steen, J. van (DHV) InnovationNetwork Report no. 10.2.245, Utrecht, The Netherlands, October 2010. In 2007 InnovationNetwork, together with DHV, developed the Reed Economy concept as a possible answer to the soil subsidence problem in the peat lands in the west of the Netherlands. Continuous drainage of the peat lands to enable livestock farming is causing soil subsidence as a result of peat oxidation. By introducing reed cultivation in this region, it would be possible to create a Reed Economy in the Dutch Peat Lands and counter soil subsidence by raising the land level. The present study explores whether innovative, high-grade applications for reed can be developed to make the cultivation of reed more profitable and thus create broader support for starting up a Reed Economy pilot project. First of all, a long list was drawn up to identify the most innovative applications. This long list was then assessed by an expert workshop and criteria were defined for the concepts with genuine potential. After the workshop, the following applications were found to be the most promising. Pagina 50
