a different ship class certification and certain adaptations to prevent the ship from capsizing. The fisherman must be an all-round entrepreneur. Safety training courses must be followed to be active in this sector. The market opportunities for fishermen are estimated as good. Offshore 59 Offshore is a special form of maritime service. This sector serves the oil sector with a range of activities, such as pipeline construction, construction and installation work, seabed research, drillings and oil well maintenance and security. The sector is worth €4 billion and has developed very favourably (a growth rate of more than 9 % a year). The principal opportunities for fishermen lie in seabed research and security. Investments are mainly necessary for seabed research, such as the placement of cranes, the provision of accommodation and the purchase of equipment. The required new competences lie particularly in the field of all-round entrepreneurship, a certain knowledge of the sector, knowledge of and experience with safety regulations and knowledge of nautical English. The opportunities can be characterized as good. A willingness to work longer and further from home and also on sundays increases the opportunities. Hydraulic engineering Hydraulic engineering mainly concerns dredging. The sector has a turnover of about €1.6 billion with a growth rate of more than 3 %. The opportunities for fishermen lie in the transportation of sand and dredged materials. The fishing vessels must be adapted to this activity (e.g. an open deck). Here too, all-round entrepreneurship is a necessary competence. The market opportunities for fishermen must be estimated as low. Maritime recreation and education One potentially promising sector is maritime recreation. Activities include offshore sports fishing, sea tours, entertainment at sea and museum boat and nursing & care boat activities. Though the current market of €150 million is not very large and the development is moderate, creative and socially skilful entrepreneurs can find good opportunities here. The most important investments concern accommodation and safety. Alongside all-round entrepreneurship, hospitality certificates (zijn dat horecapapieren?) are also often necessary. Knowledge of English and biology are also important. Water management Water management comprises the totality of activities aimed at the optimal management of ground and surface water. The opportunities for fishermen lie in salvaging cargo from ship wrecks or clearing up (floating) environmentally-harmful waste, and hiring out the ship and crew for research. This sector is still small with a turnover of €10 million, but it is growing due to the trend towards outsourcing. Investments are necessary in the field of accommodation, cranes, winches, cameras and measuring equipment. The competence requirements mainly lie in the field of all-round entrepreneurship and measurement and recording skills. The opportunities are estimated as reasonable. Pagina 66
