Summary Lupine as soya substitute in animal feed Berkum, S. van and B. Janssens (LEI Wageningen University and Research Centre) InnovationNetwork Report No. 13.2.314, Utrecht, The Netherlands, February 2013. Currently, protein rich crops cultivated in Europe are no alternative for oilcake from soybeans used as animal feed; their production is not economically feasible. The introduction of a Latin American protein and oil rich lupine could result in a more attractive crop to EU farmers and industry. Production per hectare of this new lupine, though, should be twice as high as the yield presently cultivated varieties achieve, which would need much efforts in breeding and improving cultivation techniques and management. If successful, up to 40% of the annual use of soybean’s oilcake in the Netherlands may be substituted for domestically produced lupine oilcake. 47 Pagina 52
