Summary 123 Binnenveld biomass study – final report Knoef, H. et al (BTG) InnovationNetwork Report No. 12.2.285, Utrecht, The Netherlands, April 2012. Introduction This study examined the extent to which biomass can play a role in the maintenance and improvement of the landscape. One important instrument in this respect might be a central fund through which part of the revenue derived from biomass can be reallocated to finance landscape maintenance projects. This summary presents the main findings with regard to this proposal. It also includes the conclusions of both the biomass availability study and the evaluation of the biomass conversion routes, which together form the basis of the recommendations contained in the full report. Revenue from biomass to fund landscape maintenance At present, there would seem to be limited opportunities to generate enough revenue from biomass to cover the costs of landscape maintenance. There is a significant discrepancy between current costs and income. However, given the growing demand for biomass and the rapid technological advances, it would not be inappropriate to dismiss the idea altogether. Rather, there is cause for optimism. The limited potential for generating income is due to the source of the biomass flows, their low energy content and low economic value, and their possible uses. Pagina 133
