Summary 43 The Pig Court – Natural and transparent pig farming Pape Creavorm VOF InnovationNetwork Report No. 12.2.292, Utrecht, The Netherlands, March 2012 The Pig Court is a housing concept that blends optimally into the landscape structure and is based on the original habitat and natural behaviour of the pigs. It simultaneously caters to the interests of the environment, pig farmer and society. The Pig Court consists of several innovations which jointly result in a unique new farming system. The characteristics are: 1. The roof construction is fitted with insulating foil and solar panels, enabling an energy-neutral stall. 2. The presence of greenery in the stall in the form of trees, (climbing) plants and plant containers with different types of non-toxic plants. 3. The plant containers not only act as a partition between the sections, but also as a biobed, which enables a closed air cleaning system. 4. The piglet nurseries are designed to replicate the natural nest as closely as possible. 5. A central slurry channel whose location, design and climate make maximum use of the pig’s natural cleanliness. 6. The floor in the slurry channel is designed to promote optimal and fast separation of solid manure and urine, thus minimizing ammonia emissions. A manure robot is used to clean the slurry channel. 7. Separating the solid manure from the urine permits much more efficient manure fermentation. Pagina 47
