so that the rest of society, politicians and suppliers automatically follow suit. Precisely a country like the Netherlands, which has virtually no meaningful food culture, is well-placed to build a new sustainable food culture from scratch. It starts with the actual desire to tackle the problem at the root, namely the relationship with our food and nature, with being open to dialogue and new experiences, and with making a genuine conscious choice for the sustainable food path. The government is indispensable as the driver and promoter of this path, and must translate this role into concrete policies. For instance, by making food skills and nature projects an important and integral part of the school curriculum and launching brand-new government awareness campaigns to replace the dated ‘Postbus 51’ public information commercials: from burdening people with even more information, to reaching out and touching people in their hearts and minds…and stomachs. As noted, it is all about making choices and about having the courage, as is customary business practice, to calculate back from the long-term objective (i.e. a sustainable food culture) to establish what is needed in order to achieve this objective and to raise this issue in the public debate. In this way, we as a country can really fulfil our aspiration of becoming a leader in food. This essay provides concrete suggestions for a new type of research, innovation and government policy.
