It is wonderful that the Garden of Remembrance is now a reality. A physical place resulting from a great deal of hard work. Local residents, professionals and administrators have all demonstrated their commitment to the district and their willingness to understand each other by joining forces to create this communal garden. Mutual acceptance, a spirit of unity and a feeling of joining together to ‘build’ such a remarkable green project has been enormously beneficial to the area and to improving social cohesion in general. In addition, the Garden of Remembrance makes Wielwijk (Dordrecht, The Netherlands) a perfect example for urban district development. Reminiscing about neighbourhood greenery: memories of rural living and design all in one. Universal standards and values were filtered out of the childhood tales from the participants and used as a source of inspiration for the designers when drawing the Garden of Remembrance. And the final garden is the ultimate proof of just how well this approach has worked! But before the memories could be turned into a success, alongside the involvement of local residents and professionals, we also needed people to oversee the process. The ultimate success of a project like this depends on the people closest to the community. In this report, we will explain the ins and outs of ‘Reminiscing about neighbourhood greenery’ in practice. How should you go about deploying this method? The report is intended to teach readers the best way of copying and applying the method so that it will work in other districts. So that wonderful initiatives like this can come to fruition in other places across the Netherlands. Halfway The Garden of Remembrance came about through an innovative and unique approach to involving the local community in designing their own green area. By means of ‘Reminiscing about neighbourhood greenery’, local residents were encouraged to use their childhood memories to help create a design for the new open spaces. Local participation, reminiscence The realization of the Garden of Remembrance in Wielwijk means that we have reached the halfway point. This is where the real work begins. It is a place where local residents can meet up. At least, that was the intention. This is why the garden was created. A meeting place where children can play together. Where parents can sit on park benches and chat, and where families and groups of friends can get together to enjoy the good weather with a picnic at one of the long wooden tables.
