Summary, conclusions and recommendations 79 International review of Water Husbandry Tuinhof A, F. van Steenbergen and J.P. van den Ham, Acacia Water InnovationNetwork Report No. 10.2.243, Utrecht, The Netherlands, October 2010. The Water Husbandry concept makes a valuable contribution towards promoting optimal and sustainable water usage and management based on private initiative. Water is mainly seen as a public good which (semi)government manages and supplies to users in return for a fee. The relatively low price of water and its public image do not encourage its perception as a “tradable commodity” and in many cases even leads to inefficient usage. The Water Husbandry concept breaks this traditional mould of thinking and incentivizes land owners to invest in the storage of their “own” water (precipitation within the limits of their own land), both for their own use and to supply to other parties. Key to the Water Husbandry concept is agricultural entrepreneurship, where farmers not only commercialize their land but also their water. Chapter 2 defines several key Water Husbandry characteristics and looks at the application of Water Husbandry at macro level. The conclusion is that, viewed from a global perspective, successful Water Husbandry depends more on the socio-economic conditions than on the physical factors (water scarcity). In addition, several specific char acteristics relating to the implementation of Water Husbandry are defined, and some generic conclusions about the practicability of Water Husbandry in relation to these criteria are drawn (Chapter 2.4).
