Summary Greenhouses in the future: light and floating MSc Bart van Bueren, Waterarchitect InnovationNetwork Report No. 10.2.229, Utrecht, The Netherlands, 2010. On behalf of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Greenhouse Horticulture (SIGN), research was carried out into the possibility of designing greenhouses that could float on water. The objective is the sustainable production of climate-adaptive food for a self-supporting, densely populated delta metropolis in smartly designed greenhouse complexes. Research has been carried out into various greenhouse structures and floating bodies. These were tested for technical feasibility, finance and integration of cultivation processes. Foil is expected to outperform glass in the longer term. ETFE foil is promising because of its strength, useful life and transparency. But at 12€/m2, ETFE is still too expensive for immediate application. The greenhouse structures are based on new forms optimized for foils. Foil greenhouses are more flexible than glass greenhouses, making them more suitable for use as floating greenhouses. The recommendation is to carry out further research into a double-layered foil greenhouse with cushions in long strips of 4.5x100m. If the crops need ventilation, these strips are interrupted by ventilation windows. This greenhouse requires virtually no adaptations to the cultivation system compared to existing greenhouses and cultivation systems. The estimated additional investment can be recouped thanks to the better insulation. Heat can be harvested from the cushions and this lightweight system is also interesting for a floating application. 47 Pagina 53
