Alas, many “New Crops” are actually crops that for some inexplicable reason or reasons fell into disuse and were forgotten, others may have never been studied for adaptation to new locations or climates and hence have remained obscure. Still others have never been truly domesticated. These reasons, as we shall see, are not sufficient to exclude their consideration but rather serve to suggest why growing these crops is innovative and potentially very profitable. Being the pioneer in introducing a new crop also gives one the advantage of presenting the market with a unique product that has a pricing structure which is more independent than commodity crops. Agriculture in the European Union is extremely competitive; only by innovation and creative use of the crop resources can small growers hope to find profit niches that allow them to build wealth. We hope you will enjoy reading the following pages and we trust that you will be inspired to look for agricultural innovation far beyond our suggestions. We thank you for your interest in the topic.
