design 2 : berry polyculture Most berries are harvested by hand to prevent damage to the fruit. Punctured or crushed fruit has a highly reduced shelf life and needs to be used immediately. The hand picking of berries is a labor intensive process and is oſten done using small rakes. Mechanical harvesters are now also available, but oſten damage the berries too severely for sale as whole fruit.
