P .2 System Boundaries 2007 FAO Farm Gate Prices vs. Annual Greenhouse Yield / m2 9 Yields and Prices These scatter plots show annual greenhouse yield per square meter as related to farm gate prices from two different sources: the United Nations Food and Agriculture Administration (FAO), and a combination of market prices from other sources. The FAO values appeared to be very low for the most part, which is why we searched for secondary data. The prices have been normalized to U.S. Dollars; however, in most cases they actually represent Dutch or European prices. Value (USD/kg) Pistachio 8 7 Raspberry 3 Chestnut Almond Okra Grapes, Wine Grape, Table Pecan Currant, black Date Lentil Pomegranate Hazelnut Olive Persimmon Mango Peanut Cranberry Eggplant 6 2 The data quickly reveals that standard Dutch greenhouse choices: tomato, pepper, and cucumber, perform very well in such an analysis. However, one of the main reasons for this is that the productivity of these crops has been greatly increased over the years since their adoption in Dutch greenhouses. These facilities now produce them so efficiently, that other crops have a difficult time competing in terms of yield. Two other evident points include the very significant discrepancy in data between the two different sets of sources, and the fact that the majority of crops fall into a cluster of fairly “low yield, low value” elements. 5 1 Bay Laurel Flax, fiber Hops 4 Lingonberry Boysenberry Strawberry 0 Fig Walnut, English Blueberry, Lowbush Blueberry, Highbush Artichoke Melon Watermelon Broccoli Cherry Basil Avocado Pumpkin Squash, summer Banana Asparagus Plum Pear Pluot Kiwi Nectarine Squash, winter Apricot Lemon Beans Wheat Peas, Snap Millet Lime Grapefruit Cabbage Rye Barley Rice Brussels Sprouts Leek Orange Beet Corn Rutabaga Potato Oats Bean, Green Kohlrabi Parsnip Beet, Sugar Gooseberry Zucchini Apple Garlic Scallion Onion Turnip Carrot 0 5 10 3 Currant Hazelnut Almond Okra Chestnut Grape Date Pecan Pomegranate Lentil Olive Persimmon Eggplant Mango Cranberry 2 Pepper, Sweet (H) Chicory Lettuce (H) Tomato (H) Spinach Wheat Chinese Cabbage Peanut Gooseberry 1 Artichoke Tomato (NL) Cucumber (H) Bok Choy 50 100 150 200 Annual Greenhouse Yield / m2 250 300 0 0 60 Pagina 59
